A few little things will change, but our classes will be in the same building and using the same rooms except for the smallest one we used last year. It was a bit too small for our group, so we found another room on the second floor to use instead. We will be eating lunch in the EHC cafeteria again, and enjoying refreshments in the lobby of MS Hall at break times.

Remember that the Highlands Festival is going to be taking place at the same time as our EHC event, so if you want to spend the night(s), be looking at motels and B&B in the area. Thank you to the principal of Rose Hill Elementary, Lynn Metcalfe, for her hospitality and help in making the Lee County Teacher Reading Academies a success. You will see indications in the photographs of the wonderful classrooms we were permitted to use and the refreshments that we enjoyed. Lynn is present in a few of the photographs, and if I remember correctly, she is in the first grade group photo. A large part of the credit for a successful event goes to her for her support and cheerful participation at every turn, and to her staff and faculty.

Not all of the photographs are tagged for grade level, but this is a work in progress. I have stowed away the signs and tied up most of the loose ends, at least those that might unravel.

Most of your instructors were still hanging about at 5:30 p.m. yesterday when I left, comparing notes, looking at evaluations, and talking about what a great time they had with you during the four days you spent with us. Dr. Crickmer took home with her the many digital photographs that Jessie Spence made of your activities on the last day, and when these are available I will make a final post to this website with a link that you can use to see and download photographs.

My thanks again to each of you. Drive through the gate. You will be on Garnand Avenue. There is a street sign, and we will have a sign for the Academies. As you drive up the hill, McGlothlin-Street Hall is the large building on the right with the tall white columns. Parking is behind the building, so continue on around the end of the building into the parking area.

There are two entrances to McGlothlin-Street Hall on the side near the parking area, one of which (follow the curb cut from the handicap parking spaces)is an accessible (automatic) door that will open when you push the control near the door. The automatic door comes in on the second floor. When you enter, turn immediately to your right and you will find the elevator on your right. Take the elevator down to the first floor and go left after exiting the elevator for the opening session in room 102.

If you have a question or comment, please get in touch!

Daily Schedule

There may be slight modifications to this schedule during the sessions, but this is the plan for daily activities:

All activities are in McGlothlin-Street Hall except lunch, which is in the Van Dyke Center. You will find information here on the event as well as responses to your comments. You are welcome to leave comments, and I will check the log each day and try to keep up with your questions!

Your instructors and I are all looking forward to seeing each of you at this exciting event that will be rich with excellent resources and ideas that you can use in your classroom.

Please remember to bring with you to the Academy your teacher's editions of the texts you use in reading, social studies, and science classes as well as the Teacher’s Edition of your reading program and your favorite narrative and expository children’s books. These books will be used in activities and exercises during the Academy. Other classroom supplies will be provided for you.

You will be attending the Academy on the campus of Emory & Henry College in Emory, Virginia. Emory is located at Exit 26 on Interstate 81. From the exit, follow the signs to Emory & Henry College.

Registration and attendance really costs a lot, but it is free to participants thanks to grant funding! That means it won't cost you anything to attend.

Each morning there will be a continental breakfast buffet in the Academy area (fruit, coffee, tea, muffins, etc.). Lunch will be provided in the college dining hall, and light refreshments will be served in the afternoon.

If you are coming from outside the region and wish to reserve a place to stay, please do so quickly. The Virginia Highlands Festival is in Abingdon during your stay, and rooms will fill up quickly. Abingdon, at exits 14-19 on I 81, about five to ten minutes from the college, has many accommodations.

The Virginia Highlands Festival which will be making your hotel rooms scarce includes an array of entertainment and educational activities: presentations by Barter Theatre, arts and crafts exhibits, lectures, antique shows, street exhibitions and performances, and fun in Abingdon. Plan to enjoy the Highlands Festival with us!

I am looking forward to meeting each of you and having a great first week in August!
